Bogdanovics: I Never Thought Thrombosis Could Occur…

Recently, a popular player of the DVSC-Korvex handball team, Annamária Bogdanovics, unfortunately came into the spotlight not for her sports performance, but due to a serious health issue. The young athlete was hospitalized, where she was diagnosed with thrombosis. This news surprised many, as Annamária actively participates in sports and generally enjoys good health.

The occurrence of thrombosis is particularly concerning, as it is typically not expected from a young and physically active individual. According to Annamária, the first signs of the illness manifested as pain in her right calf, which she initially thought was a sports injury. However, the sudden onset of discomfort ultimately required hospitalization.

The diagnosis was not immediate, as Annamária first attempted to alleviate her symptoms with pain relievers. Unfortunately, their effects soon diminished, leading her to seek medical attention. According to her doctors, one of the potential causes for the development of the illness could have been a previous ankle injury that did not heal completely. Currently, the athlete is undergoing daily injection treatment, and her doctors are hopeful that she will soon return to the field.

Symptoms and Warning Signs of Thrombosis

Thrombosis, especially deep vein thrombosis, often develops unnoticed and in many cases, there are no pronounced symptoms. However, when symptoms of the illness do appear, they can take the following forms:

The primary sign may be swelling in the affected limb, particularly in the ankles, feet, or even the entire lower leg. This swelling is typically a consequence of the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) in the veins.

Pain is also a common symptom, most felt in the calf, and often resembles muscle soreness. Additionally, there may be redness and a sensation of warmth over the swollen area.

In more severe cases, the initial signs of deep vein thrombosis can even lead to a pulmonary embolism, which is a life-threatening condition. Symptoms of pulmonary embolism include shortness of breath, chest pain that may worsen with deep breaths or coughing, and coughing that may produce blood in severe cases.

Prevention of Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis poses a serious health risk and can lead to numerous severe complications. However, regular exercise and changes to a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing the disease.

It is important to reduce excess weight, as obesity increases the risk of thrombosis. Additionally, quitting smoking and maintaining normal blood pressure levels are essential for prevention. High blood pressure and smoking increase the likelihood of blood clot formation.

If advised by a doctor, wearing compression stockings can help improve circulation, thus reducing the risk of thrombosis. A healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and adherence to preventive measures are fundamental in preventing thrombosis, so it is recommended for everyone to consider these factors.
