How can I recognize the signs if my family member is struggling with alcohol addiction?

The problem of alcohol consumption is a significant concern worldwide, and Hungary is no exception. The measured alcohol consumption in the country is extremely high, with many believing it has reached the level of one million alcoholics. According to OECD data, the per capita alcohol consumption corresponds to more than 11 liters of pure alcohol annually. This figure includes the alcohol consumption of everyone from infants to the elderly, so in reality, this amount could be even higher when considering the varying alcohol content of beverages.

Due to social stigmatization, it is often difficult to recognize when someone is teetering on the edge of alcohol dependency. Public perception often imagines the classic “drunken alcoholic,” which obscures reality. Alcoholism can manifest in much more hidden forms, and the initial signs are often barely noticeable. Below, we present some warning signs that can help us recognize if someone in our environment is struggling with alcohol-related issues.

Searching for excuses to drink

Many people tend to use various occasions as an excuse to consume alcohol. Birthdays, name days, or the start of a new job can provide a great excuse for toasting. The problem begins when an individual constantly seeks opportunities to drink and can no longer imagine celebrating without alcohol. This behavior can easily turn into a kind of compulsion, where the celebration is no longer about the joy of the moment, but rather the necessity of consuming alcohol.

If we notice that someone increasingly organizes their daily activities around alcohol consumption, it is worth considering whether they genuinely want to celebrate or are merely looking for an excuse to drink. Such behavior can lead to serious problems in the long run and may be a concerning sign for family members and friends.

Daily routine becoming dependent on alcohol

Another warning sign may be if someone organizes their daily activities to create opportunities for alcohol consumption. For example, if the person no longer feels the need to drive after work and thus easily drinks a beer or a glass of wine. The desire for alcohol can dominate to the extent that the entire agenda revolves around drinking.

This kind of attitude not only endangers the individual’s health but also affects work performance and social relationships. If the daily routine is built around alcohol consumption, it is important to take the signs seriously and consider that this behavior may indicate a problem.

Signs of loss of control and secrecy

Loss of control is another warning sign that indicates problematic forms of alcohol consumption. The so-called “binge drinking,” where someone abstains from alcohol for months and then drinks excessively on one occasion, also signals a serious issue. In such cases, the individual may not remember what happened, indicating that they have lost control over their drinking.

Alcoholics often deny their problems, and if someone tries to confront them about it, they may react angrily or deflect the conversation. This reaction stems from feelings of anxiety and fear, as many are unwilling to accept that they have a problem. If someone in our environment reacts in this way, it is important to be attentive and not ignore the signs.

Alcohol dependency can manifest in many ways, and the signs often remain hidden. If we are concerned about a loved one, it is worth carefully considering these warning signs and seeking help if necessary.
