Stomas: A Stoma Patient’s Experiences for Others

The stoma, as a topic, is an unfamiliar or misunderstood concept for many. People often do not know what it really means and how it affects daily life. The lives of individuals with a stoma are influenced not only by physical challenges but also by psychological ones, as the method of bowel elimination and the transformation of their bodies often carry a stigmatizing effect.

Society often treats these aspects of bodily function as taboos, whereas open communication and awareness would be crucial for the acceptance of people living with a stoma. Sharing the lived reality can help others to better understand this situation and emphasizes that the quality of life for those living with a stoma depends not only on physical support but also on emotional backing.

A stoma is not just a medical phenomenon; it is much more a lifestyle challenge that transforms daily life. Both scientific knowledge and lay experiences are important for society to better understand and support individuals with a stoma.

What is a stoma?

A stoma is an artificially created opening in the abdominal wall. Its purpose is for the affected individual to eliminate feces or intestinal gases through the stoma. The original meaning of the word is “gas exchange opening,” but in today’s context, it refers to the alteration of bowel function.

Many may not realize that dismantling the taboos surrounding bowel elimination is essential for understanding the lives of people with a stoma. Bowel elimination is a natural, albeit sensitive topic for many, which is rarely discussed. However, it is important to talk about it, as many struggle with similar issues. In the age of the internet, there is more information available than ever, so it is worth keeping an open mind to expand our knowledge.

The quality of life for individuals with a stoma is closely related to society’s attitude towards them. Understanding and acceptance are crucial for those living with a stoma to feel included rather than marginalized as full members of the community. Besides medical aspects, emotional support is also important, as people with a stoma often struggle with stigma and social rejection.

The creation and causes of a stoma

There can be several causes for the formation of a stoma, often related to serious health issues. The most common reasons include bowel disorders, bowel cancer, or even congenital defects. The number of affected individuals is continuously rising, and many of them are not even aware that a stoma life awaits them.

I myself became a stoma patient due to colon cancer, and I would like to share my experiences so that others can recognize the early signs of the disease. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer, and delays in recognition often have serious consequences. Symptoms such as bloody stools or changes in stool color can be warning signs.

Observing the consistency and color of feces is essential, as changes may indicate the onset of disease. Modern bathroom fixtures often prevent thorough observation of stools, so it is advisable to choose a toilet bowl that aids in the timely detection of symptoms.

The process of bowel elimination and life with a stoma

The bowel elimination habits of individuals with a stoma change radically. A healthy rectum has a sphincter muscle that allows for control over bowel movements. In contrast, a stoma lacks this function, leading to involuntary release of feces and gases from the body.

This situation causes many emotional trials, as people with a stoma often feel ashamed due to the loss of control. Societal expectations and norms surrounding bowel elimination further complicate the situation. People tend to judge what they do not understand, so individuals with a stoma often struggle for acceptance.

Eliminating feces through a stoma requires a new lifestyle. The stoma bag, which is attached to the opening, is essential for daily life. Without it, a stoma life would be unimaginable. For those living with a stoma, selecting the right products and mastering their use is crucial for a comfortable and dignified life.

Many do not know that various supports and community programs are available for individuals with a stoma, which can help them overcome daily challenges. Community support and sharing experiences are extremely important for stoma patients to not feel alone in their struggles.

Acceptance, understanding, and support are key for those living with a stoma to lead a happy and fulfilling life.
