It can be determined in a few minutes whether there is a suspicion of dementia

The importance of early detection of dementia, as a form of cognitive decline, is becoming increasingly significant as it affects more people. Many are unaware that initial symptoms, such as a decline in short-term memory, can already be warning signs. It is crucial for the medical community that patients seek medical attention in a timely manner, as early diagnosis allows for the initiation of effective treatment. A new, rapid, and sensitive test is now available at the University of Debrecen’s Psychiatric Clinic, which aids in the early screening of dementia. With this method, not only doctors but also patients can more easily recognize the problem, allowing for quicker identification of signs of cognitive decline.

The signs of dementia and the importance of early detection

The suspicion of dementia typically begins with a decline in short-term memory. People often find it increasingly difficult to remember new information, such as names, dates, or even events that occurred just a few minutes earlier. However, it is important to note that these symptoms can also be natural consequences of aging. Therefore, it can be challenging to distinguish whether forgetfulness is a normal aging process or an indication of dementia.

The key role of early detection of dementia is crucial in influencing the course of the disease. Experts emphasize that timely diagnosis allows for the commencement of appropriate treatment, which can improve patients’ quality of life. Anikó Égerházi, an associate professor at the University of Debrecen’s Clinical Center Psychiatric Clinic, warns that any symptoms indicating cognitive decline should prompt a visit to a doctor, as dementia does not only affect the elderly.

The causes and types of dementia

There are numerous causes behind dementia, and people often associate the term with Alzheimer’s disease. However, it is worth knowing that there are different types of dementia, with the most common cause linked to neurodegenerative processes. These processes can appear as early as around the age of forty, but similar symptoms can also be observed in younger individuals, often intertwined with mood disorders. The new test used by the University of Debrecen helps to differentiate these symptoms.

If there is suspicion of dementia during the completion of the questionnaire, further examinations are essential. The ADAS-Cog test, for example, is used for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease, while the neuropsychological computer test provides additional information about the patient’s condition. Another common type of dementia is vascular dementia, caused by various vascular diseases. Early diagnosis of this type is particularly important, as treating underlying conditions can help alleviate or eliminate symptoms.

The Test Your Memory test and future possibilities

The Test Your Memory questionnaire is currently available at the University of Debrecen’s Clinical Center, at the Psychiatric Clinic, and in several general practitioner offices in Debrecen. Due to the speed and simplicity of the test, it offers significant advantages in dementia screening, and plans are in place to make it available in even more practices in the future.

The goal is to enable early detection of cognitive decline in family doctor offices as well, contributing to timely recognition and treatment of the disease. Experts hope that with this new method, early diagnosis of dementia will become more widely accessible, making it easier for patients and their families to seek appropriate medical care. The introduction of this new test marks a milestone in dementia screening, which can contribute to improving the quality of life for patients.
