Methods for Identifying Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension

Preeclampsia is a hypertensive condition that occurs during pregnancy, often developing after the 20th week of gestation. As a consequence, protein may appear in the woman’s urine, indicating the severity of the problem. Untreated preeclampsia carries serious health risks, such as heart attack or premature delivery of the fetus. The medical community is actively seeking solutions to detect complications arising during pregnancy in a timely manner.
Recent research has identified 45 different compounds whose levels varied among women who later developed preeclampsia. In the study, researchers analyzed blood samples taken around the 15th week of pregnancy, and based on the results, they are working on developing a new test that could assist in the early diagnosis of preeclampsia.
The causes and symptoms of preeclampsia
The exact causes of preeclampsia are still not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to its onset. Elevated blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine are the most characteristic symptoms, but other signs can also indicate this condition. These include headaches, visual disturbances, intense abdominal pain, or swelling, particularly in the legs and hands. Preeclampsia can have severe consequences, posing risks not only to the mother but also to the fetus.
During pregnancy, measuring blood pressure is particularly important, as high values require immediate medical intervention. Doctors generally recommend regular check-ups, especially for those with a predisposition to high blood pressure or a history of preeclampsia. Proper medical supervision and monitoring of symptoms allow for early intervention and the prevention of complications.
Research findings and future possibilities
In the latest research, experts compared blood samples from 66 expectant mothers; those who later developed preeclampsia and those who did not. The results showed that the levels of 40 organic molecules were elevated, while five molecules decreased in the early stages of pregnancy. Among these compounds, 14 were highlighted, based on which researchers developed a test that can predict the onset of preeclampsia with up to 90% accuracy.
This “metabolic fingerprint test” could revolutionize prenatal care, providing an opportunity for women to receive the necessary medical support in a timely manner. The lead researcher, Philip Baker, emphasized that the introduction of the test could save many women’s lives, as early diagnosis allows for the application of appropriate treatment methods.
The future outlook is promising, as the medical community continues to work on prevention and treatment options for preeclampsia. As research progresses, we are getting closer to ensuring that the health of women and their children during pregnancy becomes even safer.
